Field Closures

The flying field will not be available on Sunday 22nd June or Saturday 28th June when it will be used for car parking for the Thames Valley and Reading Town Rowing Regattas. Flying on weekdays between these dates is not affected.

Enstone Fly In

Once more Ron Perkins has organised a day out in the Oxfordshire countryside. As usual this will be a mixed model and full-size event with the real possibility of a few flights in some of the interesting planes that turn up. With any luck there will also be other activities for the kids, even the big ones and there will certainly be a barbeque. Bring your own booze, burgers and bangers (if you’re flying better replace the booze with non-alcoholic beverage of choice). The whole thing will be starting at approximately 1pm.

Cholsey Model Mania

The club will be running the model flying for this event at Cholsey School. You will require a BMFA "B" certificate and insurance in order to fly. Even if you’re not flying it’s worth a trip out to Cholsey to meet people from other clubs and see the rest of the event. There are usually boats and steam models as well as a few nice planes. Details from Martin Dance or the Model Mania website at http:/www.cholseymodelmania.co.uk

Beale Park Waterplane and Boat Show

This will be the second of these annual events. As this is a public show organised by Beale Park themselves and widely advertised, flying will be restricted to "B" Certificate pilots, unlike our normal Spring and Autumn Fly ins. The club will once more be in charge of the flying and will require helpers for both days to manage transmitter control etc. Pilots and helpers please contact Andy Stretton (email : andrew.stretton@virgin.net or Tel: 01256 352539) for more details.

Committee Meeting

Minutes of Committee Meeting 29.4.03

Apologies : Dave Belcher, Tony Roberts, Andrew Stretton

Minutes of previous meeting: Accepted

Matters arising:

Rowing Course - No change in the situation.

Dreadnought flying site - Still no invoice received for payment for this site despite repeated attempts to contact the responsible parties.

Pegboard - The pegboard has been stolen from the site. A new one will be produced as soon as possible. It is the responsibility of everyone flying to ensure that adequate frequency controls are maintained at all times.

New Flying site:

There is still no progress with the planning permission for change of use. The road works which are required to move the site entrance have not been done. It is also believed that funding has now been found too enable some archaeological work to take place which is likely to further delay any prospect of our using this field.

The Committee decided to reopen negotiations with Wasing Estates with a view to discovering if they have any other possibly more immediately available locations to offer. If not it may be necessary to widen the search again, though for the time being we will retain the option on the field currently under discussion. It is still possible that it might work out.

Events:

Now that we are meeting at the flying field each Tuesday evening, weather permitting, it is intended to hold a few ad hoc competitions on days when the training load is not too heavy. Any such competitions will not require any special models so bring along whatever you have.

Events so far arranged for the summer include :

Enstone 28th June

Cholsey Model Mania, 20th July

Beale Park Show, 2nd/3rd August

Royal Victoria Country Park, 16th/17th August

Site Safety etc:

Until we have a new fixed peg board please take extra care with frequency control at the site. Several members have portable peg boards which they have been good enough to bring along but when there is no peg board available it is still the responsibility of every flier to ensure that at all times they are operating on a clear frequency. Do not switch on until you are certain that there is no other flier currently using your frequency.

There have been a number of comments recently about noisy models. Random sound checks will re-instituted and any model failing to meet the BMFA 82dB guideline will be immediately grounded until such time as it has passed a further sound test.

Protech Tiger Moth – a review

Introduction

Yet another mini review by me, John Moyler. This is about a speed 400 ARTF Tiger Moth with a 36" wingspan.

Kit

This is complete, containing

Wings, Fuselage, Tail plane

Bag of fittings, Bag of pre-bent wire for under carriage and cabanes.

It is well constructed but a bit on the heavy side.

The main tasks to complete are the assembly of the under carriage and cabanes by soldering the pre-bent wire together. This is one thing that the instructions do not cover very well, if you do not have experience of soldering this could cause problems. I made up my own jigs to complete this process.

Apart from the above the construction went without any problems.

Flying

This was conducted with a speed 400 motor and an 8-cell CP 1300-mAh pack. The plane just managed to take off from a tarmac surface. The plane gained about 40 feet in height very slowly. Control responses at the rates indicated in the instructions were very sluggish, until I used rudder and ailerons to turn.

This was programmed into my transmitter for the next flight.

The next flight was a bit of a disaster as I landed in a tree, fortunately without damage. I realised that it was under powered so installed a brushless motor for the next flight.

This time I had plenty of power and a take off from grass was no problem. I noticed now that the plane was a handful to fly, it had to be flown fast otherwise it would stall. In fact during the landing approach I stalled the plane causing some damage.

I repaired the minor damage and thought about what could cause the problems. I came to the conclusion that the wing loading was too high. I exchanged the CP1300 pack for a 500 mAh pack. This time the plane flew well from a hand launch. The Tiger Moth flew very well if for a short time,. I had a flew flights and will be trying out other battery packs at a later date to see if I can get a better duration. This plane has caused me to learn a lot about electric flight.

The plane was built with the recommended equipment and when I checked the weights I found it was 5 oz overweight with the CP1300 pack. Even with the lightest pack it was still 1oz overweight.

This is a plane for the experienced flyer.

Comparing the two speed 400 biplanes I have built and reviewed, I would still recommend the Miss Chief as the better plane.

You Might Be An RC Modeller If..

See how many you score :

  • You have ever glued both hands together with CA and had to use an exacto knife in your teeth to cut them apart.
  • You have taken your plane off and panic on the third lap, realizing that you haven't extended the transmitter antenna.
  • You get to the field and realize your transmitter is still on charge at home.
  • You have switched your retracts up while you taxi your plane out to take off.
  • You lean over your just-finished new plane to brush off a bug and drop a screwdriver out of your shirt pocket that rips through the wing covering.
  • You are making an inverted low pass and then pull "UP" on the elevator.
  • You have taken your plane off with the glow igniter still clipped to the engine.
  • You ever had to jump over your plane as you were landing it.
  • You will go flying when it's 100 in the shade but won't cut the grass for your wife `cause "it's too hot out there".
  • You have built two right wings for a single wing plane.
  • You have 47 miscellaneous NiCd batteries and still can't find a battery for your torch.
  • You have a sun tan in the roof of your mouth.
  • You keep feeling for the trim tabs on your TV remote control.
  • You buy the "wife and kids" a shiny new computer for Christmas then won’t let them near it cus you need it to practise with the latest flight simulator.
  • You got more "toys" for Christmas than your kids did.
  • You complain about the weather on bright summer days if there’s "too much wind"
  • You look for the servo linkage and antenna wire on every plane in a movie.
  • You have ever taken your plane off with the ailerons reversed and still landed it safely.
  • You can blow gnats from your eyes out of the corner of your mouth and keep on flying.
  • You think about checking the frequency board before operating your TV remote at home.
  • Your transmitter has more computing power than your PC.

Shooting the breeze

Don’t forget that the Tuesday club meetings will be at the flying field for the summer, roughly May to September. They will start at around 6:30-7:00 to catch the light. On the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month we may be at St Barnabus Church Hall if the weather is really terrible.

Although the emphasis of the Tuesday meetings is on Training for the many new members, everyone is welcome to turn up and fly. We will be running a few low-key competitions from time to time, all guaranteed to be suitable for any standard sports models so no need for any special planes.

Flying field safety

I’m sure by now you’ve all heard about the tragic fatal accident at Dartford Heath where a young girl was struck by a model. I’m not going to say too much about this because the investigations by the police and CAA have still to be completed. What I will say is that the first thing that occurred to me when I heard about it was how similar the environment at Dartford was to our flying field at Dreadnought. A well-known model flying site with approval from the owners of the land but in an area freely accessible to the public with large numbers of people who understand nothing about models wandering around the place. An incident like that at Dartford Heath serves to emphasise how we really must keep up our efforts to make sure that we fly as safely as possible. Any suggestions for safety improvements gratefully received by any committee member. To get you started here are one or two ideas I know of from other clubs. E.g.

  1. must have at least 2 members at the field for flying to be allowed
  2. always at least one non-flying spotter on the flight line watching out for any danger, particularly people on or close to the strip
  3. Pilots with A certificate restricted to maximum .46 (2-stroke) or 53 (4-stroke) motors (to reduce the size and weight of plane)
  4. No more than 3 planes in the air at once. Our current limit is 5.
  5. Helicopters and fixed wing to have dedicated time slots, not allowed to fly simultaneously

I’m not saying I agree with any of these and at the moment no-one is proposing them for inclusion in our rule book. It’s simply that they are all rules which exist in some clubs, ostensibly to improve safety. They would need to be proposed and agreed by the Annual General Meeting if they were to come into force for our club. If you have strong feelings about any of these or any ideas of your own for improving safety, preferably without imposing too many irritating rules, please contact me or any committee member.

BMFA Certificates

Well it’s heading towards show time again and I’m sure the vexed topic of when and why the various BMFA certificates are required will soon be raising it’s head again.

I imagine you all realise that for some years it has been a club rule that no-one may fly solo unless they possess a BMFA "A" Certificate. This rule is well observed by the more recent members but I believe there may still be a few old hands who haven’t got round to taking the very simple test and who are therefore technically flying in breach of club rules I’m not sure what stops people from taking this test, I passed it so it’s really not difficult. Perhaps it’s time we started enforcing the rule more rigorously ?

For flying displays, i.e. events to which the public are specifically invited as spectators, the BMFA recommendation is that all pilots must have at least a "B" certificate or equivalent. This is pretty much universally followed and certainly at any display where the club controls the flying we accept this recommendation without reservation. In terms of the current events this applies to Cholsey ModelMania and the Beale Park August Show. Other events such as the Royal Victoria Park event may in addition to requiring a "B" certificate, only allow invited pilots known to the organisers.

The "B" certificate ruling does not apply to the club fly ins at Beale Park or Enstone where an "A" Certificate is acceptable.

Centenary of Flight event (March 29/30)

Just in case you haven’t already read every word of your BMFA News from cover to cover let me point you to the article on page 17 about the Centenary of Flight event on Windermere. Much was made of the excellent formation Puppeteer flying by local heroes and club members Andy Stretton and Bob Roper. Howard Faure of Hobby Stores and Beale Park fame was also present though I’m not sure if he’s actually a club member this year. A couple of good pictures of Puppeteers (Bob’s or Andy’s, even the photographer wasn’t sure) but you’ll need to get your magnifying glass out to recognise the lads in the group picture. It looks like a nice pond does that Windermere, almost as good as Beale Park…maybe.

BMFA Nationals

I was really disappointed to see that the "Nats" have had to be cancelled this year. From talking to people I guess that not many club members are particularly bothered but a trip to the Nats on the August Bank Holiday have been the highlight of my spectating year since I was a nipper. I missed last year for various reasons and now they’ve cancelled this year.

The club I used to belong to in the 60s and early 70s had quite a few Control Line competitors and some from FF and RC so we always used to run a trip to the Nats. When I took up modelling again it seemed only natural to wander off to Barkston Heath to see what was going on. If you’ve never been it’s something you really should try at least once in a modelling lifetime. Where else will you see not only a top class show line with the usual flashy show stuff but also the very best in R/C Scale, Pattern, IMAC, Pylon racing, Fun Fly and something to do with Helicopters ? I’m not sure what the helicopters does cus I’ve not got round to them yet. And if that wasn’t enough there’s also Free Flight Scale and all the control line classes, Stunt, Speed, Combat, Team Racing etc. and the best line-up of suppliers you’ve ever seen in one place, all willing to take your money off you, usually at far better prices than at Sandown.

And then there’s the sheer lunacy of the evening Free flight Free-for-alls. A couple of hundred people throwing FF models of all shapes and sizes around the place. Last time there were at least 3 of Eric Clutton’s Fishfaces, a couple of Washboards and plenty of the deadly Chipper Choppers. Older members may well have big grins on their faces now. Younger members will probably wonder what strange recreational chemicals I’ve been messing with. Ahhh nostalgia ain’t what it used to be.

Oh well, August Bank Holiday isn’t going to be the same this year. I may even get some decorating done. I might even get out flying.
